Every day, firefighters are called to serve a civic duty, which is to protect citizens in a time of crisis. Firefighters are one of the more well rounded and versatile emergency task forces in the world.

Fire protection involves:

  • preventing, combating, and extinguishing fires
  • answering emergency calls
  • operating and maintaining fire department equipment, apparatus and quarters

These duties require extensive training in firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials, and emergency medical care. Firefighters must operate apparatus and perform dangerous assignments under emergency conditions. Any of these situations may require strenuous physical activity in extremely hostile environments such as toxic smoke and very high temperatures.

Although fighting fires, performing rescue operations, and providing emergency medical are the primary duties, in many departments a significant portion of a firefighter's time is spent conducting inspections, participating in training, and performing routine station duties.

 The Firefighters Creed

When I'm called to duty god
wherever flames may rage
give me strength to save a life
whatever be it's age
Help me to embrace a little child
before it is too late
or save an older person from
the horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert
to hear the weakest shout
and quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out
I want to fill my calling and
to give the best in me
to guard my neighbor and
protect his property
And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife
