Armed and Ready - Seniors' Smoke Alarm Program

Between the years of 1998 and 2007, 29% of all fatal fires in Ontario involved persons 65 and older. These statistics show when it comes to fire, adults over age 65 are at greater risk than any other group. As most fire deaths occur in the home, it is important that seniors know how to protect themselves with a working smoke alarm.

The 'Armed and Ready' Senior's Smoke Alarm Program will assist people who because of age, physical or mental limitations or financial reasons are not able to install or maintain a smoke alarm in their home.

This program is available for owner-occupied single family homes in Milton.  To participate in this program submit the request form below or call  905-878-9251.

Appointments can be made from 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. any day except Sundays and statutory holidays. Milton Fire Department staff will come to your home and provide and install the required number of smoke alarms or batteries.

The Ontario Fire Code requires that smoke alarms be installed on every storey of your home. If you live in a rental property it is the owner's responsibility to install and maintain smoke alarms.  If you have concerns with smoke alarm operation, maintenance or installation, call the Fire Prevention Division. 

Armed and Ready - Union Gas Partnership


The Milton Fire Department has partnered with Union Gas and The Spectra Energy Foundation in support of various Public Education endeavours in our community.

Union Gas Limited has generously provided grants used to purchase both Carbon Monoxide Alarms and Smoke Alarms which will be provided and installed in the homes of some of our communities most needy and vulnerable families.
